I like having flowers on the deck rail along with the feeders. Of course they are a pleasant addition for the eye, but the birds use them as well. When the Gerbera Daisies get old, the blossoms pop with a silky material that the female Goldfinches use for nesting material. I came out on the deck one spring morning and a female Goldfinch had a beak full of this silky material and flew off with it. Oh, did I mention I like to photograph the daisies as well?
